Carl Barât - Book Signing Waterstones, L1

28th September 2010
Carl Barât - Book Signing Waterstones, Liverpool One

Carl Barât (ex-Libertines and Dirty Pretty things front man) has undoubtedly reinvented himself.

With the launch of his book ‘Threepenny Memoir – The Lives of a Libertine’ and his eponymous album released within a week of each other, Barât seems to have left the old Libertine behind and emerged from the ashes with a successful solo career firmly underway.

Threepenny Memoir is a collection of personal and intimate revelations spanning ten years.

From Barât meeting Pete Doherty and their tempestuous relationship. Each chapter recalling key moments from his past life as one of the ‘Libertines’ and events that shaped the person he is today.

At his book signing and acoustic set at Waterstones in Liverpool, Barât looked more at home performing on stage, than he did behind the book sellers table, even with a Peroni to hand.
His recent performance at Manchester’s Deaf Institute on 23rd October was part of his hugely successful UK and European, solo tour.

The packed out, top floor venue, eagerly awaited Barât’s return. The last to pick up his guitar and saunter onto the stage, he opened up the gig with a punchy song from his solo album ‘Je Regrette Je Regrette’, followed by his new single ‘Run with the Boys’. He lead the audience into a frenzy with the first chords of ‘The Man who would be King’ and later as he stripped down to his vest and exposed the infamous ‘Libertine’ tattoo, he raised yet another ecstatic cheer from the audience.

Barât performed songs from the Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things and from his new solo album. The latter being a mixture of cleverly written, heartfelt and diverse tunes. We certainly hear more of his voice on his solo album, than in days gone by when he seemed to battle against the volume of his guitar.

The encore brought him back on the stage to perform an acoustic set followed by his band (which included his pregnant girlfriend Edie and his brother Ollie) rejoining him for a fabulous performance of ‘The Fall’ from his new album and ending the evening with an old Libertines favourite ‘Don’t Look Back Into the Sun’.

…And no, his new material isn’t the Libertines, but then why launch an exciting solo career only to sound exactly the same as you did almost a decade ago!
